Memorandum of Understanding
between
United States Aid's Malaria Vaccine Development Programme (USAIDMVDP)
and
European Malaria Vaccine Initiative (EMVI)

In recognition of:

The pressing need for increased and accelerated research, development and evaluation of malaria vaccines,

the mutual benefit of concertation of the various funding mechanisms relevant to malaria vaccine research,

and within the framework of the Statutes of each entity, the European Malaria Vaccine Initiative (EMVI) and the United States AID’s Malaria Vaccine Development Program (USAIDMVDP) have agreed to enter into enhanced collaboration whenever possible, initially at level I with early co-ordination of effort, and aiming at achieving joint programming, separate resourcing when opportunities arise.

The collaboration can take place on four levels:

  1. Separate programming and resourcing, post facto reporting with emphasis on exchange of information.
  2. Separate programming and resourcing, early coordination of effort and enhanced collaboration on:
    seminars/workshops,
    mutual representation,
exchange and discussion of pre-clinical and clinical trial results,
design of clinical trials, especially in malaria endemic areas and connected training.
  3. Joint programming, separate resourcing with enhanced co-ordination of:
    strategic planning,
    work planning,
    reviews.
  4. Joint programming, pooled resourcing with enhanced co-ordination of funding.

The parties agree that co-operation on level I already exists, level II is feasible and levels III and IV should be aimed at.
